One of my favourite game series from the last generation is back but with a whole new character. But don’t worry Dante lovers, Nero isn’t half bad...

Sometimes changing a game’s lead character that people really like is a bad, bad move *cough* MGS2 *cough*. But Capcom have pulled off the impossible by making a new character that means you won’t miss Dante one bit. You play as Nero, a young soldier in a group called “The Order of the Sword”. One day Dante shows up and strikes down the leader of the order. After a brief battle with Dante you’re sent on the mission to hunt him down to avenge the death of your leader.

Nero has three ways to attack his foes. His “Red Queen” sword that can be revved up to provide big damage. The “Blue Rose” is Nero’s double-barrelled pistol for long range attacks and last but not least, “The Devil Bringer” is where Nero gets his power from. It’s a demonic arm which allows you to grab and throw enemies. Of course being a DMC game all of these abilities can be linked together with stunning effect. You can hack a foe up a bit, launch it into the air, jump up, throw it back to earth, use your Devil Bringer to pull it back into the air then do an air combo to finish it off. With unlockable combos and abilities the combat only improves. To unlock more abilities you have to gain Proud Souls, which you get at the end of every mission, to get more you have to get a high grade for the mission.

Like in previous games to get the ‘S’ rank you’ll need to finish the level in a quick time, find Red Orbs and get a high style ranking. Stylish ranking is about keeping your combos up and not being hit. Once you get used to the moves you’ll soon be getting huge Super Sick Style combos (achievement unlocked). One of the highlights of the game is the excellent boss battles. All of the bosses are super cool and really fun to do. Some of the bosses are HUGE and really are great to fight against. On your way to these bosses you’ll be going through the usual castles and street environments as well as interesting and great looking jungles, icy locations, underground mines and labs, fighting all sorts of baddies along the way.

At a certain point during the game you’ll gain control of the son of Sparda himself, Dante. Sporting all his moves from DMC3 and his trusty weapons, he is just as cool as ever. Like in DMC3 you can switch weapons on the fly to create some mad combos, but now in DMC4 you can switch your style (sword master, gunslinger, royal guard and trickster) on the fly too. You can upgrade your styles to suit how you play e.g. gunslinger if you’re into your guns in a big way.

Once you’ve completed your quest you will unlock a new difficulty level (I think there are six overall) with the ability to start it with your unlocked abilities. You also unlock the ‘Bloody Palace’ which is a survival type game with 60 levels. A cool feature to the game is the ability to upload scores and progress to Xbox Live. 'Why is that cool?' you may ask. Well what it does is give you an update of your friend’s progress every time you boot up the game, so you press start and it will come up saying ‘JoeBloggs has completed mission 7 with an S rank’.

Visually I think DMC4 is a real treat, hugely detailed environments with atmospheric lighting. Totally slick animation means every move looks just so good, and all the moves link together really well. In between the action great looking in-game cutscenes keep the story flowing - and all this running at a rock solid 60fps. All you have to provide are the slick moves…

The music is the usual ‘rawk’ rock music while fighting, but has some really decent subtler tracks while exploring and going from A to B. Sound effects are top notch as is the voice acting.

So Devil May Cry 4 leaves me wanting more just like the first 3 did. It plays great, looks great and sounds great. It’s also something that the 360 just doesn’t have any of, and that’s character action games. Give it a go, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
