In the day and age of Multi-core PCs and high end console gaming systems it can be easy to overlook 2D games for higher-priced 3D games. But if you’re willing to look past the missing dimension and like 2D top-down shooters like Geometry wars or Asteroids this game is right up your alley. If you need extra incentive, it's 800 Microsoft points cost puts it in under the $10 USD (£6.85) mark!
Ion Assault is basically a blend of Geometry Wars and Asteroids, but it has enough differences to make it a worthy buy and worthwhile to play. For starters the graphics are juiced by a very strong particle engine. This is needed for the next difference, instead of an unending ammunition supply, your ship has an Ion Cannon. To power this cannon up, you need to absorb ions from the space surrounding you, however you can't just stay stationary to do this, you need to move around the board as the ions are scattered around like dust.
Your ship's cannon has a charge meter so you can deliver low power shots to herd space debris together, then fully charge your cannon on the group of debris for multi-kill bonuses. Throw in randomly spawning alien baddies (who want nothing more than to kill you and eat your eyes!) several various power-ups you can collect and you've got yourself a top-down shooter that requires you to be clever and tactical.
The game's Campaign is 4 levels, each level is broken up into 5 sections, with a boss battle after the 5th section. As with most similar games, the levels/sections start off slow and build to a higher difficulty as the game nears the last boss.
Now for the dislikes… Charging and firing the Ion Cannon is done by holding down then releasing the L-trigger instead of the R-trigger. HELLO!? EVERY other Xbox360 shooter on the face of planet earth uses the R-trigger, so what were you thinking!? And before you ask, no, there’s is no option to change the control scheme/layout either. Next dislike… At times (especially in co-op) with so many glowing particles shooting around the screen it can be dizzying, obscuring your view and even offering enemies a chance to creep in and get the better of you as your eyes are distracted by all the pretty particle colours. The only other dislike I really have is the female “Hal” computer voice-over who sounds like she's smoked a couple packs a day for 10 years. Sexy cyberbabe? No. Possible robo-transexual? Yes.
Best Bits
- Multiplayer versus can offer a chance to test your skills and gives a break from the campaign. - Co-op mode. - Tactics in a 2D shooter? Woot! - Great graphics for a 2D game. - Low cost.
Worst Bits
- Unintuitive control scheme. - Busy graphics can distract you from danger. - Terribly annoying voiceover with no way to mute it.
