Yoostar 2: In The Movies sounds like a great idea for a party game; I mean, who hasn’t mimicked a famous line or scene from a movie at one time or another? In a video equivalent of a karaoke game Yoostar 2 allows you and a friend (or friends) to speak the lines as prompted from some of the best-known scenes of a huge selection of over 80 movie scenes, 10 Hollywood sets and 20 backgrounds, with additional scenes available for purchase and download via Xbox Live.

The Yoostar 2 library includes: contemporary hits like The Hangover, Tropic Thunder, Meet The Fockers, 300 and Kick Ass, as well as modern classics like The Godfather and Rocky and all-time classics like Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz. There are even clips from popular TV shows such as Star Trek, Mad Men and CSI.

The scenes mean you’ll be “performing” either the part of, or alongside, stars like Marlon Brando, Humphrey Bogart, Eddie Murphy (when he was still funny!), Gerard Butler, Cameron Diaz and Arnold Schwarzenegger (before he was a politician!) and you can get detailed information about each scene and the dialogue in it as you go through the game.

Yoostar 2’s basic mode is Quick Play Mode – this is the way to use it as a party game and allows you to play through scenes quickly, whether on your own or with a group of friends. The game features solo and two-player scenes.

As you play, the Kinect sensor picks up your voice and when the sequence is finished it replays it and overlays your score, based on how well you keep time with the dialogue and even movement in more advanced scenes.

Yoostar 2 also features a Challenge Mode, which is a progression-based game that gives you a series of scene challenges. Good performances are rewarded by unlocking new areas on your road to Hollywood.

You may well be surprised how good (or bad) an actor you are, but you’ll also be amazed how well you compare to some of the so-called ‘stars’ in the available scenes. If you’re really proud of your performances (or are just one of those weirdo exhibitionists) you can share your starring role with friends and the Yoostar 2 community on Yoostar 2's in-game social portal, Yoostar.com. You can even delight your acquaintances by posting your clips on your Facebook page or Twitter. If you do this, you can earn awards and increase your "Fame" status through community participation, such as sharing videos and rating other player's performances.

You’ll be awarded new video backgrounds, including a tornado and an exploding car, against which you can ad-lib to produce your own cinematic masterpiece – and these can also be saved and shared. You can also perform on a tasty selection of Hollywood sets, including amongst others, scenes from Gladiator, Men in Black and King Kong.

Yoostar 2 is a really nice idea, but it doesn’t quite work as well as it should. The selection cursor is over-sensitive so it’s very easy to select the wrong thing by accident and end up in the sound menu when you’re trying to select a scene. As a party game, this is a big flaw- it’s a bit fiddly to select options and too easy for other participants to unintentionally interfere with what Kinect is sensing. So unless all the participants are already adept at using the Kinect system, you’ll have one person constantly setting up for everyone else to have all the fun.

There’s also a bit of a problem when the characters are shown side on, as it’s very difficult to read your lines on cue when you’re not facing the screen and the microphone struggles to pick up your voice too. This can be cured by learning the lines off by heart but seriously, who’s going to do that? All that said, it’s probably quite funny if you have several slightly inebriated mates who you trust to play with your Xbox and Kinect and you’re really in to Eddie Murphy or Ben Stiller.
