Gambling Gone Virtual

World technology has advanced more in the past three decades than the previous three centuries combined. In today’s electronic, virtual and miniature planet of convenience, entertainment is something that people take very seriously. Once upon a time, it was enough to play a game of chess or jerk down on the steely mechanical arm of a slot machine. No more. Now we want all-out war games on Xbox 360 and a digital, push-button 7-reel slot machine with a progressive jackpot. Faster access, bigger excess – that’s the technological way.

The trend pushing toward virtual realism has encompassed games as a whole. Not only do gaming consoles like PlayStation 3 and Wii offer up cutting-edge videogames, but online gaming on Macs and PCs has also kept in full stride. Creating this technology was no easy task, and implementing it, especially via online casinos and poker rooms, can be rather expensive. But in order to compete, each new game must be leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor in terms of graphics and sound. The all-important “wow” factor is present in most of the online games we see today.

This next wave in online gaming isn’t reserved to gambling either. Whether you’re playing a first-person shooter or a role-playing game on the web, the difference in gaming technology is clear. Many games have surfaced online that take full advantage of today’s technology. If you’re into the shoot-em-up-style games, free Shockwave games are popping up by the dozens. If you’re more into the World of Warcraft type of games, MMORPGs are released one after the other. There’s a huge market for these games, and on the web, most can be found and played for free – making them all the more popular.

Online gambling games have benefited from greater technology more than any other game type out there. Not only have bright and colorful graphics injected some excitement into an otherwise mediocre format, but the accessibility has put casinos into the customer’s living room, instead of forcing the customer to travel. Many of the games available now—whether it’s the latest version of blackjack, Caribbean poker or roulette—offer more of a complete package than can be found at land-based gaming houses.

For example, in a land-based casino, the ambiance is set up specifically to take you for a ride. They want you to drink, they want you to eat, and most of all they want you to gamble. Casinos do whatever necessary to entice your dollars from your wallet. Gambling online allows you to remain in control and not give in to the temptation. And with games that are much more entertaining due to technology, people are actually betting and losing less money. It’s about the experience and having fun with online gaming, whereas with a land-based establishment, it’s all about winning big. The latter can cause some serious issues.

Technology has also helped games online to stay safe and secure. With sophisticated encryptions and entire companies devoting resources to ward off would-be hackers and promote fair play, online sites are the safest places to gamble in the world. Without the technology, it would be playing at your own risk.

It’s hard to say what’s in store for the future of gaming in general. But one thing’s for sure: avid gamers are on the edge of their seats in anticipation. There’s nothing quite as entertaining as a good game, and with the technological marvels we have the privilege of playing today, it’s hard to stay bored for long.
