Did you recently play R&C: Future, and feel the need for some more madness before the next full sequel, due for release Q4 2009? Well you’re in luck because our friends at Insomniac games have brought us this great downloadable game.

Quest for Booty picks up a little after Future, Clank’s been mysteriously taken and Ratchet is trying to discover a way to rescue his little metal chum. With the help of the robot pirate Rusty Pete you find there’s a way to reach Ratchet, but Captain Slag sure won’t let you get him back the easy way. To help fight Slag’s crew you have some returning weapons; the Tornado Launcher is back, as is the Fusion Grenade, the Lightning Ravager, the Predator Launcher and the Combustor. There aren’t as many toys to play with as there are in Future but this is understandable due it being an extra “episode” rather than a proper sequel.

Also to help you this time out the Omni Wrench has been upgraded with a kinetic tether for all manner of puzzle solving. The Wrench can now be used to extend bridges, move floating platforms and pull down jump pads. I’m sure we’ll see more examples of ways to use it in the next full game. The game controls the same as Future, which isn’t a bad thing. You can control the camera, strafe shoot, jump, attack and select weapons with ease while fighting the pirates.

Visually the game is just as good as its full retail predecessor, with excellent detail levels, great lighting effects and masses going on at once. The audio is also excellent.

Overall Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty is a great downloadable game for £10. You get the great production values that Insomniac always deliver, as well as the great R&C gameplay you love. Obviously we’re the same as everyone else and would always want a good game to last longer but for £10 this is good value, and hard to complain about.

Best Bits

- Great visuals
- Bridges the gap between Future and the next game
Worst Bits

- It's short
