The first thing that will strike you about MC3 is just how good it looks – bearing in mind that this is a first-gen PSP title it’s absolutely stunning at times, maybe even nicer than Ridge Racer. Out on the dark city streets it’s just like playing the big console versions, although the frame rate could be smoother. In fact if I have a criticism this seems to be just like the home console versions, so maybe they could have personalised and tweaked the PSP version slightly. But, at this stage of the PSP’s development it’s amazing to be able to play this complex and good-looking an arcade racer on the move. All the cars, SUVs and bikes (and mods) from the original game are here (including all sorts from Lotus through Humvee to McLaren F1 and Ducati), and all three cities (San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit) as well, with no compromise on size or the mind-bending number of possible routes for each race. The cars and bikes handle nicely, with vastly different handling characteristics that make power slides and jumps a joy, whatever you’re driving (or riding).

Typically for a Rockstar game’s soundtrack, most of the music is of the “love it or leave it” variety, but there’s plenty of it, and if you like this sort of ‘bling racer’ then there’s almost certainly something in here to suit your taste (or lack of). If there’s a criticism of the sound at all, then the cars and even the traffic could have sounded more meaty though.

Rockstar has almost spoiled the mobile gamer and at the same time overloaded the PSP with this game; certainly the frame rate could be better, as could the loading times (handheld gamers just aren’t used to loading times like this!), the FMV isn’t the best and the menu system sucks exhaust pipe, but the entire PS2/Xbox game seems to be here, the sheer scale of the game is amazing and you have to check that you’re playing it on a handheld - amazing achievement, whichever side of the racing game school you favour, the handling and sense of speed that MC3 supplies will give you plenty of thrills, as long as you have the time.

Best Bits

- A remarkable port of the PS2/Xbox game that looks lovely.
- A massive game with loads of races to do and vehicles to unlock.
- The racing is engrossing…
Worst Bits

- But the long loading times mean playing on the bus or train could mean you miss your stop.
- The Cops are a pain in the arse, and only seem to pick on you.
