It was only a matter of time before Tekken happened on PSP. Many other franchises have been brought from PlayStation2 onto Sony’s handheld, and now its time for one of Namco’s modern classics to get the shrink treatment.
There are two very impressive things that struck me when first playing Tekken Dark Resurrection. Firstly, the ridiculously good graphics, which are nothing short of outstanding, and secondly how much there is to this game, and how it’s not just a simple port of a PlayStation2 version.
What Namco have done with this is staggering, from the amount of characters available in the game (30), to the many game modes that are present from boot, and unlockable later on. The main game modes are in of course; Story, Practice, VS, and the Arcade Mode that was reborn with Tekken 5 (and in the Arcade) is here too, where you carry your rank from fight to fight, challenging increasingly tough opponents along the way, and leveling up your rank. Along the way, you gain credits, which can be used to buy items and customise characters, and new game modes also open up too.
Story Mode is like the old Tekken Arcade Mode, where you choose a character and beat a certain amount of enemy characters, then fight the end bosses, and upon winning are treated to an FMV movie sequence. Each and every character in the game has a Story Mode, and you unlock more stuff along the way when completing it with each character. The FMV quality is fantastic as we’ve come to expect from Namco, and they really look great on the PSP screen.
Tekken plays really nicely on the PSP, using the four face buttons for each of your characters limbs, and the L+R shoulders are used to double-up limb attacks for doing throws. You can use either the d-pad or the analog stick to play the game, and I found it much better to use the digital d-pad to fight.
As previously mentioned, the graphics are simply stunning, and not just for a PSP game, they look incredible regardless of the platform. The environments are fantastic too, with lots of detail in around the players and in the background. Remember when Tekken came out on PlayStation, and the backgrounds had to be cut down? Not anymore, they are highly detailed here and it all runs at 60fps without ever dropping (bar pre-fight banter, strangely). Music and speech is of very high quality too.
The multiplayer in the game is superb too, and the wifi two player VS Mode works flawlessly, without any lag, and it plays just like it would if you were on one console playing it together. There are a number of mini-games to unlock too, one of which is Tekken Bowling, which you may remember from Tekken Tag Tournament on PlayStation2.
This really is a very high quality release from Namco, perhaps even surpassing the dreamy Ridge Racer compilation that launched with PSP last year. Tekken Dark Resurrection is simply unmissable if you’re a fan of the series, because it offers so much, and really adds to the fantastic Tekken 5 that came out on PlayStation2 last year. Got a PSP and some friends with PSP's? – Then you need this game.
