Bet On Soldier is a First Person Shooter which revolves around a TV show named B.O.S where the general public bet on soldiers (who would have thought it?). The twist here is that they’re not just fighting in arenas like in Unreal Tournament, these guys have to fight each other while doing missions for the war effort. The war has been raging for 80 years and practically everyone either fights or works in war factories. You play Nolan Daneworth who’s suffering a bit of amnesia, one of the only things he can remember is that his wife was murdered by “The Boryenkas Brothers” who just so happen to be champions of B.O.S. So you decide to seek retribution by joining the fight and raising the ranks until you can fight the brothers and take your revenge.
Before each fight you’ll have to kit up and choose which B.O.S champions you’ll have to fight along the way to your objective. You’ll have over 40 weapons and 40 champions to choose from. Weapons include machine guns, rocket launchers, 5 barrelled shotgun, sniper rifles, chain gun and acid gun. You can also hire mercenaries to help you during your missions, you can order these guys about and they’ll help you take out the enemy. For every enemy you kill you’ll get some money, for more stylish kills you get more money; head shots for example, would get you more money than a body shot kill. The enemy stick together and protect each other with shields and hide around corners but can easily be mowed down. The champions just seem to be more armoured variants of the normal soldiers.
The multiplayer features 32 player battles with the ability to choose from 6 different classes. You’ll also be able to place bets on other players to get some money to upgrade equipment.
Graphically B.O.S is a bit hit and miss. Environments and character faces look decent, but weapons and armour models look too shiny. Everything is highly detailed and whilst the weapon and armour models don’t look bad it’s the shiny shader effect applied to them that makes them seem a little strange, like they’re covered in slime perhaps.
The sound is decent enough, weapon effects are very nice and meaty. Voice acting and music is ok too.
Overall B.O.S struggles to find its place in this most over-crowded of genres. With other games like Half Life 2, Doom 3 and now Quake 4 on the shelf next to it there’s nothing here that stands out at all. But if you’re a FPS nut who’s tried the best, now try the rest.
