Sometimes I wonder why I really bother, I really do. Hidden & Dangerous 2, was for me the most played game of 2003 and quite rightly so. As you can read from the original review >here< I loved it and bored anyone who would listen by telling them just how good it was, but did anyone listen? Did they chuff as like! – with the exception of me and I would imagine the families of the developers and publishers I don’t think anyone even bothered.

So what is Sabre Squadron? Well essentially it’s more of the same with a few tweaks.

Single player wise you get a new campaign to play through. This has the same high class presentation as in the original game; the problem comes when you actually get into the missions. There is a HUGE sense of Déjà vu to the whole thing. It’s all a bit too similar, but 12 months on.

Ok the first mission starts well enough, with some of the best storm and weather effects seen in a game really creating a good atmosphere, but I found that within minutes I was just going through the motions. Try as I might I just could not work up the enthusiasm as I did 12 months ago, and I think there lies the problem. A year has passed, new games have come out, the graphics barrier has been pushed forward but Sabre Squadron does not feel like it has evolved or moved on at all. It’s firmly stuck in 2003 just as we are nearing the end of 2004.

I may sound as if I am being unfair, and the game does try; there are a few new vehicles thrown in and the enemies seem to have been smartened up a bit, but it’s just not enough. Also many of the bugs have been ironed out from the original game, but this just highlights another issue. I enjoyed the original, bugs and all, but just could not find myself enjoying the expansion pack as much.

One thing that has been added (and notches the score up a couple of points) is the addition of a co-op mode. Here as the name suggests you tackle the missions alongside other players, and it’s here I was reminded of some of the strategic brilliance from last year. You really can work through the levels using some great tactics, laying down cover fire as a team mate works closer to the objective then exchanging roles and leapfrogging their position The only problem is that you can only play each mission as a one-off rather than as part of the campaign (as with the single player). Also another problem is that there are no missions dedicated solely for co-op.

As I said, I may sound unduly unfair but I fully expected that I would love this and try as I might I did not - maybe you can have too much of a good thing. I can’t help but feel that the time spent creating Sabre Squadron would have been better put towards a proper, full-blown sequel.

Best Bits

- Co-Op mode.
- More of the same…
Worst Bits

- But too much can be a bad thing.
