Wow! Delta Force has come of age, and if your last experience of DF was Land Warrior, be prepared for a pleasant surprise. This game has by far the best graphics, textures, spot effects, landscapes, scenery, artificial intelligence, weapon detail, and plot so far produced by the DF team, and it stands comparison with the best for atmosphere, challenge, authenticity and enthralling gameplay. The game is about real events that happened in Somalia only 10 years ago, and so it has a very contemporary feel. The excellent games manual (introduced by a member of Task Force Ranger) gives tribute to the courage, resolve, resourcefulness and sacrifices made by the U.S. forces involved, and I advise you to read it (well I did, so why shouldn't you?).
An informative intro video sets the background of human misery that leads to your assignment in the ungoverned, clan-controlled and lawless wastes of Somalia, where the heavily-armed factions seem determined to maximize their power by controlling anything that could give them an edge on their rivals, so U.N. aid is a major target for their greedy aspirations. You and your squad risk your lives to support the U.N. efforts to aid the ordinary Somali folks, whose lives have been messed-up by years of drought, famine, and the clan-wars over territory that your garden weeds would die in. Your missions (16 missions in all) include various operations to prevent and deter attacks on, and rescue UN supply convoys, disable anti-U.N. propaganda transmitters, capture clan-bosses, and of course, rescue the downed Black Hawk group. All whilst being careful not to kill the ordinary Somali folks who run around like idiots trying to get shot, or throw rocks at you (yes, they hurt!) and tell you to "leave us alone".
You also man a 50mm Humvee-mounted machine gun on several seat-of-your-pants missions across desert trails and through streets of snipers, defend a convoy with a minigun on a Black Hawk, and ride outboard shotgun on the AH-6 "Little Bird" helicopter, often before leaping off to save besieged UN personnel, liberate kidnappees from armed strongholds, and disrupt the clans' various wicked schemes. Weapons are modern and authentic; you can choose or use the default set for the mission. Med packs and ammo-ups are not too easy to find, but likely to be necessary on some levels, so beware of wandering too far or you can be chucked out of the game for desertion! You also need to do your bit to protect teammates etc. as too many casualties will result in an abortive mission. At suitable moments you can give team orders selected from a brief menu, such as performing a room-clearance, etc., and at the harder levels of play you will be unlikely to succeed without making full use of your colleagues and armory. You actually get to blow some steel doors open with your explosives! - Ok it's scripted, but don't you get fed up with all those locked doors that you can't open although you hit them with enough explosives to reduce an entire building to rubble? You can also enjoy some nice particle and fog effects such as swirling dust or water-patterns from the helicopter's rotor-blades, and appropriate splashes and ripples in water. If you enjoy a good FPS, if you've never played a Delta Force game, or been disappointed with past DF efforts, you must get this one!
Oops - I should mention that you could play in 3rd person also, for those out-of-body-experience-lovers wherever you are.
