Future Tactics is a stealth game. Actually, no it’s not – it’s a turn-based strategy, but I say it’s a stealth game too as it seems to have arrived from nowhere and snuck its way onto the scene with all the skill of Garrett or Fisher.
I was a bit dubious about the game to be fair. After all, the great games are the ones you have heard about for months and have anticipated more than the summer holidays aren’t they? Well I was wrong. Not only is FT a fantastic little game, but it has something that far too many games these days ignore. FUN – it has it by the truckload.
Whilst Future Tactics is a turn-based game, it actually has a very arcade-like feel to it. When making attacks it’s down to you to actually aim – having to stop a sideways-moving line followed by a vertical one to line up your shot. This actually allows for you to aim for parts of the enemy and get in some skilful head shots. So whilst it really is turn-based the game actually hides the fact very well. Each turn you are free to move your characters around as much as you want, within their movement radius, and try and find the optimum position to make your attack.
The graphics are lovely – very cartoon-like in style and really add to that fun factor, they are however also functional. You can use the terrain for cover, or for a height advantage, whilst the enemy uses it skilfully to sneak up on you. Needless to say, as a big turn-based game fan I am looking forward to the full game very much.
