Sometime in the mid-nineties a game called X-Com: Enemy Unknown carved itself a cult following and over a long period collected an awful lot of followers. The game came virtually unheralded and addicted so many gamers not normally drawn to the genre that it became a games industry legend. The sheer fact that gamers still play the original X-Com today (or at least speak longingly of it) is a testament to its longevity, quality and addictiveness. A popular email version of the turn-based tactical war game followed, and now the Gollop brothers (creators of X-Com) are back with Laser Squad Nemesis.
![]() You need an email account to play LSN (but let's face it, if you're reading this it's unlikely that you haven't got one), and the system requirements are also very modest so almost anyone can have a go. Once you've installed the game your best plan is to head for the tutorial - essential for a clear overview and the easiest way to get a grasp of the control interface. The tutorials are the only time you'll be able to play against an AI opponent though, this game may not push the graphical boundaries, but it's seriously man-on-man warfare. You can also play against 'Bounty Hunters' (experts good enough to show newbies the ropes without slaying them mercilessly), or log on to the Laser Squad Nemesis Forums and get challenged/challenge someone used to playing newbs from there. Subscribe and you'll get access to all the playable species, and loads of maps, and finding a game is also easy. The three races; Human Marines, Machina and Spawn all use different weapons, formations and tactics, and you'll undoubtedly settle on a favourite at some point simply because their characteristics and strengths suit your style of play. Each turn lasts for ten seconds realtime, and all the movement and combat orders must be given. Then your 'turn' is sent to your opponent who has his 'go' and so on…
![]() The game has a potential tactical depth like few other games, and nothing beats playing a sneaky human opponent (especially if it's an old mate). Graphics are purely functional but do the job admirably, whilst keeping the required spec down. If you like the genre, this game may just be the best thing so far - but it's unlikely to convert any heathens out there.
