Buzz has been a big hit for Sony and the PS2 when it came out with ‘The Music Quiz’. Since then ‘The Big Quiz’ was released and now ‘The Sports Quiz’ hits the PS2.
If you’ve played any other Buzz game you’ll pretty much know what to expect. You choose single or multiplayer (who plays these games by themselves?), how long you want the quiz to last then enter your name and select your buzzer sound and a whacky character. Single player consists of 2 rounds. The first round builds up your time for the final round and the second round is a Weakest Link-style game where you have to build your points up and then bank them or risk losing them with a wrong answer. But we all know Buzz isn’t about a single player experience, it’s about the multiplayer! Get 3 friends or family members on the other 3 buzzers and you’re sure to have a good time. The usual rounds are present from previous Buzz games. Points Builder, Pass the Bomb, Point Stealer and Fastest Finger. But there are also new rounds present. Sprint is a good one where all contestants are on a treadmill track and if you get a correct answer you can move forward but get a wrong answer and you’ll move back with risk of falling off the end.
The variety of questions is very good and you’ll get asked questions about dozens of sports; football, rugby, track, boxing, tennis, golf, baseball, swimming, skiing and others. So even if you know your football that knowledge alone won’t guarantee you a win. Even though it is a quiz about sports it still shouldn’t put people off who think they don’t know enough about sport. I’ve played games where people enjoy themselves without a vast knowledge of sports. You also have the option to play a team game with 2 sets of buzzers and 8 people which is nice, and you can also build a custom game taking out rounds you don’t like or even removing the rounds all together and just playing a quick fire question game. It’s a good addition to the Buzz library of titles with a lot of fun to be had.
The game looks nice and colourful with all the cartoony characters, which are well animated. Sound is decent with all the voiceovers and annoying phrases coming from Buzz’s mouth. There are some strange gaps in the sound between rounds though, which is odd.
Overall Buzz is a great game for you to enjoy with the family or a group of mates. The sports part might put some people off but it’s fun for all. Roll on the movie quiz.
