To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Metal Slug Franchise, the Anthology was released on the PS2. It contains 7 different Metal Slug games. Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5 and the creatively titled Metal Slug 6, a brand new version for the PS2.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for a decade or who have never ventured into an arcade or run an emulator here is a quick summary; The Metal Slug games are a series of 2D (yes you heard right, good old two dimensional), sprite-based games developed by SNK. I would go as far to say that, along with the Streetfighter series, Metal Slug elevated pixels to the level of an art form. These are beautifully drawn games, oozing with humour in the animations and ladled lovingly with detail. Considering Metal Slug is knocking on for 10 years old and only runs at about 320 x 240 res it is still a good looking game (albeit a bit fuzzy on today's hardware).

You play the role of a Mercenary solider out to kill all the bad guys and rescue Robinson Crusoe type characters in pajamas (acid trip?). You can take on this task single-handedly, best of luck, or co-operatively in 2 player mode. Playing this game in an arcade in co-op is a coin guzzling fest - these machines can suck money out of you quicker than a wife and four kids (and I should know). A much cheaper option is to buy the game for a console.

You are met by wave upon wave of heavily armed soldiers with a variety of weapons, guns, grenades, flamethrowers, tanks, camels, planes etc. Throw into the mix the occasional Metal Slug armoured bosses, (think Metal Gear in cartoon form) and you get the picture.

The game IS old but still strangely addictive. It’s a no-brainer to play. Run, jump, shoot etc. but it just draws you in to play a little more. Yes, you are gunning down people or setting them alight with a flamer thrower, but the cartoon level of violence is no worse than you'll see in Itchy and Scratchy these days. So it is a game I'd let my kids play. However GTA, The Getaway and Metal Gear are still firmly on the top shelf out of reach. So if you have played and enjoyed the Metal Slug games in the past and want to relive them again and again with a mate it’s worth a punt. However don't build up your hopes for the "new" Metal Slug game as this is really just more of the same with less pixel-y backdrops.
