Sniper Elite is a World War II based shooter, where you are an American soldier who must get into enemy territory (the Soviet’s) and stop them from taking over. The game is played in a third-person perspective for character movement and aiming is done through a first-person viewpoint.
Your main weapon is, naturally, a sniper rifle, but you’ll carry handguns and other weaponry for close encounters too. Aiming and firing your weapon is like any other first-person shooter, but there are few things that you have to be aware of. Gravity and wind speed can play a big part in how accurate you are with your shot, as your bullets will soon fall out of their trajectory, and wind can and will knock them off course. Other elements come into play too, like how calm your breathing is and your heart rate (i.e. if you’re injured, you won’t be as accurate), and environmental effects can also hinder your skills. It’s much deeper than just point and shoot and appears to work well.
The environments in this preview build offer a great glimpse into the finished game’s twenty-eight missions. Whether certain areas will be used more than once for multiple missions is unknown, but regardless they are nice and big, with a very realistic war-torn look to them.
The final game offers 8-player online play and two-player split-screen co-op. I am not sure if there is an online co-op mode, but it’s certainly possible and would be extremely popular I’m sure.
Sniper Elite has the potential to be a very intense and challenging first/third person shooter game when it ships for PS2, Xbox and PC in September.
