Gran Turismo 3 did for the PS2 what its predecessors did for the PSOne, it brought the racing genre to a new level of realism and offered gamers something new to contend with, GT Concept tries to take a new approach to that, by bringing together all the weirdest looking vehicles from around the world and putting them together for your driving pleasure.
Concept isn't so much a sequel to GT3, its more of a cheap clone, it looks the same, feels the same and plays the same, but its insides are different. The main variation is this - there's no Gran Turismo mode, Polyphony opted to remove it so the game was more accessible to casual gamers, instead working on making the arcade mode the focus of the game. In GT Concept there's no working your way through championships, earning licenses and buying cars, you simply race to unlock new motors, which naturally gets more difficult as you progress.
The cars in the game are all concept cars, in development and not available to the public yet, they all look very impressive, if a little strange, and they all handle as you'd imagine. Polyphony did a good job of making the most of some of the cars peculiarity, putting you in championships against similar vehicles, often equally as weird as yours, which makes for some closed matched racing. The amount of innovation in the designs of Concept's vehicles would've made a 50mm mounted cannon fit right in, but car damage is still non-existent so it would've been pointless, shame.
GT Concept tries to appeal to 2 very different audiences, it attempts to ease newcomers into the series while still offering something different to veterans, it has a very arcadey feel and its very easy to pick up and play, but there's not much there to keep you interested in the long run. By completing a certain amount of races in GT Concept you can earn yourself 10,000,000 credits to use in GT3, which is a clever way of convincing first time players to buy it, but the incentive probably isn't enough to make everyone play the game through.
GT Concept is a worthy purchase for the budget price, especially if GT3's Gran Turismo mode was too complicated for you, but it really doesn't offer much to experienced gamers and is only worth a look if you really cant wait for GT4.
