And so Jason Donovan makes his next gen debut in Buzz! Quiz TV. And in answer to your first question: Yes, it is just a hi-def version of the tried and tested buzzer-based quiz format. But it's been polished in every conceivable way.
“Only” 5000 questions to play in the game? On Movies, TV, Music, health and lifestyle etc. If that’s not enough to whet the appetite you can hook up to t’internet and download some more.
The game supports user-generated content, “mature” content (I daren’t venture there when play testing with the kids), and you can even create your own quizzes. At the end of a user-generated quiz there is an option to rate it from 1-4 stars. So there appears to be an element of governance to the content too, which is reassuring. Obviously the host doesn’t read out these quizzes so they are not as lively as the included questions with his dazzling repartee and withering put downs.
No-one to play against? Not a problem! You can now hop online and play against others. However I’m sure you’ll suffer from the annoying trait of people dropping out of games when they are losing.
There’s a decent selection of different avatars from Elvis impersonators, mime artists to dizzy cheerleaders. The animation is good, if a little limited in terms of number of combinations of responses. The custard pies do work well though.
Buzz! Quiz TV has pretty much the same game dynamic as before, fastest finger style rounds, pass the bomb, point stealing etc.
And finally; for another thirty notes or so you can get wireless buzzers which would probably make me play the game more often. They’d be a good idea because after unravelling the ball of wire my kids have mangled the buzzers into I am normally mentally drained before I’ve started.
