Ever wanted to play a game where you are a chicken that shoots evil invading penguins? Well thanks to Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken now you can. Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is a traditional 2D platform/shooter game where you play as a chicken called Hardboiled who used to work for the penguin army and now is on a vendetta against anything that’s black and white and red all over.

The game plays pretty much the same as most 2D shooters; there’s the buttons for changing weapons and gadgets and the buttons for moving. The rest are pretty much for making things die. The controls feel quite clunky when you are faced with a lot of enemies and you find that you’ve changed weapons instead of moving. But the game distances itself from most 2D shooters and has a perfect blend of shooting action and puzzle solving, most of which involve mind control or grenades...

Of course if you’re going to take on an evil army of Nazi penguins you’re going to need some beastly weaponry. The game provides you with the usual suspects such as the pistol, SMG and the shotgun and thrown weapons such as grenades and a mind control bug. If they weren’t enough you also have a jetpack. While using the jetpack you then assume a dogfight mode in where you basically just shoot penguins in helicopters and pick up ammo to refuel your, what I like to call, ‘penguin annihilation fund’ (ammo).

Graphically Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken looks superb; with a blend of cel-shaded characters on a 3D background that makes the game look really nice at times, especially for a game that was downloaded from the PlayStation marketplace.

The game also features a co-op mode which allows you to fight the for the bird revolution with a buddy. You can choose different characters each with a different gun style like pistols or SMGs or shotguns. This doesn’t really affect the gameplay but is a nice touch. In this mode it requires both people to work together to overcome obstacles by jumping on each other’s shoulders to reach ledges. Although during this mode I found figuring out what to hard due to poor signposting. However when playing co-op with a friend we had to give up thanks to coming across a seemingly impossible part of the game which was rather a let-down.

Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken is a solid 2D platformer with a protagonist that is a chicken and looks suspiciously like Marcus Fenix (Gears of War) with a beak. Although throughout the game there can be poor signposting (especially in co-op mode) and the voice acting may be a bit off, the game definitely delivers in terms of action, fun and graphical presentation and is therefore highly recommended, especially at a price of £7.19/€8.99.
