I think it’s the strongest song list for any SingStar title so far. It’s got something for everyone. All the songs are great fun. For those of you new to the series here’s a brief explanation of how you play the game. You and a friend grab a mic (rophone), the words for the songs will appear at the bottom of the screen and in the middle are “bars”. The bars indicate the pitch and length of the lyric you are singing. So if you sing and your colour appears under the bar that means you have to sing in a higher pitch and vice-versa. After the song you get a rating to tell you how good (or bad if you’re me) you are at singing. The new feature for Vol. 2 is the “Harmony Mode” which lets you and a friend harmonise to certain songs in the game i.e. singing the background lyrics. This feature has also been patched into the first SingStar on PS3.

Like I mentioned earlier the PS3 editions of SingStar come with some features that no “next gen” music games can do without. First is the ability to download songs to your hard drive to extend the experience. At the time of writing there are… wait for it…. 310 songs to download! A very impressive amount and there is a varied amount of genres and artists. A lot of the songs are old favourites from Sony’s catalogue and are ported from the PS2 games though. So if you own all the PS2 games you can keep disc swapping, or download them to keep them all in one place. The ‘new’ downloadable songs work on SingStar PS3 and Volume 2 and are only £0.99. The other feature uses the online SingStore too. Using the PlayStation EYE you can record your performance and then post it on the game and website, sort of like a SingStar YouTube. People can then rate your performance, it’s a lot of fun to watch and there are some genuinely funny videos. You also have a profile that keeps track of your scores so other people can see.

Graphics are really an issue with Singstar but the game looks nice, very crisp and easy to follow menus. The videos aren’t in HD (because only the very latest music videos are shot in HD) but they still look pretty good. Obviously the sound quality is very important to a game like this and it’s very good, and sounds just like if you were listening through your stereo (but with your terrible singing over the top).

Overall it’s almost exactly the same game as SingStar PS3, bar the harmony mode. This disc features a great song list and only adds to the already great experience. One of the best party games around. I think it’d be a good idea to have the songs from either Vol.2 or SingStar PS3 installed to your hard drive so you can do away with disc swapping. Maybe a feature for the future?
