Euro 2008 is underway but England are nowhere to be seen. Yes, there’s only one way to see England lift this year’s trophy and that’s by taking them to glory yourself.

EA’s footie games have always been outshone by the Pro Evolution Soccer series in review scores and with football game lovers, but in the last year that fact started to change. A poor outing by PES and a decent showing for FIFA last year began to change gamer’s minds. One of the first neat features of Euro ’08 is the ability to captain your country. When the game first starts up you’ll have to choose a country to represent, once chosen everything you do in the game will be put towards your country’s total. So if you win Euro ’08 (with any team) all those points gathered while playing will be put towards whichever country you selected at the start and added to an overall total competing against all the other nations. Logically enough you get awarded more points for being a lower ranked side and beating the giants of European football. At the end of the real life competition whichever nation is top of the leaderboard will be the champions of Europe, so if your county got knocked out or didn’t qualify then at least you could get your nation ‘some’ glory.

So on to the game itself, all the usual game types are here. A regular match, Penalties, Euro 2008 and a new mode called ‘Captain Your Country’. Just playing a match is pretty self explanatory, you can chose which type of game it is; like a friendly, qualifier or a knockout game. The ‘Be A Pro’ mode from FIFA 08 is back for regular games, this is a great mode where you choose a single player to control and you only control that player through the whole game (a bit like Namco’s Libero Grande on the PSone). You call for passes and through balls from your computer-controlled teammates. It’s a lot of fun.

Captain Your Country plays in the same sort of way but is a more in-depth game. You and 3 friends can all play through the qualifying, friendlies and Euro 2008 finals whilst competing for the captaincy. You create a player, change how he looks, what his stronger foot is, choose a commentary name then take him through the B internationals to captain… if you’re good enough. After playing the matches you gain XP (experience points) that can be spent on upgrading all sorts of your player’s stats like shooting, dribbling, heading and tackling. It’s definitely the game mode that captured my attention the most. Finally you have Euro 2008, you can play the whole thing from qualifying to finals, or go straight to the finals. Of course online is supported with 1v1s or 2v2s. Leagues and tournaments are also supported and are set up and ready to join. The online play is very good, no noticeable lag problems. It certainly seems to play better than the 360 version online, we had several laggy experiences with that.

The features are all well and good but how does it play? If you’ve played FIFA 08 you’ll know what to expect. It’s just been slightly tweaked. Passing feels really good and easy to do, you can knock the ball about nicely. Shooting is coming along with the ability to score all types of goals, side foots, belters from the edge of the area. I did have a problem with the through balls though. A lot of the time they didn’t seem to go ‘through’ just hit into the nearest defender. Skills and tricks are really good, flicking the right stick in a direction will have your player turn in that direction or holding L2 and flicking the right stick will perform dummies and tricks to beat defenders. My favourite feature of all though is the ability to control goal celebrations. It’s absolutely brilliant, scoring a goal then making your player hold a finger to his lips whilst circling the opponents is hilarious!

It's not all good though. For a start, as it’s an EA football game you would expect ALL of the teams to have official kits, even the minor European teams should all have proper kits and not just shirts with a flag for a badge. However, some teams (including Holland!) aren’t licensed, I couldn’t believe it - not just the kits are wrong, even the player names are phoney. Not good enough. It’s just a lot of little things that really bug me like the England manager still being Steve McClaren (he got sacked over 6 months ago). Or the fact that when the game is over in some stadiums the players all walk towards a grandstand with no tunnel, or when substitutes are coming on there’s no sign of the bench behind them, is it too hard to make the players stand by the bench and go off the pitch towards a tunnel?

Now I think this game is really mixed visually. While the stadiums architecturally look excellent, the lack of colour makes them look drab, Wembley, for example, looks like it’s all painted the same shade of grey all over. From the angle you play at the game looks great (apart from some players’ heads look too small for their body), excellent animation makes the game look realistic but I find it gets a bit grim up close. The numbers on the back of the shirts look way too small, every shirt texture looks like its made out of a sack and they all have the exact same creases on. The players’ faces are a bit dodgy too, while you can tell who everyone is they just don’t look as perfect as they should. Wayne Rooney looks more like Dean Windass!

Sound has always been amazing in EA Sports titles and this is no different with commentary provided by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend. Both keep up with play, say interesting facts and get most things right. But one thing Clive and Andy: Gerrard CAN score from just outside the box and yes he has done it 100 odd times. The crowd noise is brilliant, realistic chants and cheers. It even has individual people shouting things in your surround speakers like “I could do better than that”.

Overall the EA football games are showing definite signs of improvement; Euro 2008 builds upon FIFA 08 adding nice little tweaks and plays a great game of football. The commentary and controllable celebrations are definite plusses. But a build up of minor niggles keeps this game from being a nine.
