Designing Xbox Buffy to play as a 3rd person adventure in the Tomb Raider mould was only to be expected, but what was totally surprising to me was just how good it turned out to be. Convincingly violent, impact-heavy hand-to-hand combat (which never ceases to be fun) and smooth visuals (with some excellent lighting effects) soon suck you right into Buffy's dark world.

The game is extremely faithful to the TV series, the theme music kicks the game off to a good start, and locations from Sunnydale High are easily recognisable. If the voice actors aren't the real ones, then they're very good imitations, and the game's character models have a nice cartoon-style look to them - oh, and in-game Buffy is actually more attractive than Sarah Michelle Gellar, so that's a good thing.

There is lots of TR style climbing and exploring to be done, but beating the crap out of vampires and mutants of all descriptions is always at to the fore. Buffy also has weapons (crossbow, water pistol, blade umm… thing) which she can use in 1st or 3rd person modes. The water pistol can shoot vampire killing holy water or act like a flame thrower when hellfire is used. The blade eventually gets powered up so you can throw it like a death-dealing boomerang.

Non-player character's are all beautifully animated and lip-synched when they talk. And the breakable scenery really adds to the mayhem when you smash a bad guy through a table or crate. Too many samey, enclosed levels, occasional glitches, a slight lack of agility and odd sticky spots on the scenery mean despite being a real arse-kicker, Buffy never feels as epic or adventurous as the Tomb Raider games, but it's still an awful lot of fun.

Buffy is probably the best TV-to-game adaptation yet, and although that's probably not much of a recommendation alone, it's a must for fans of the series and a pretty good adventure in its own right.
